AlloyDB

Exam guide§2.2
AlloyDB

PostgreSQL-compatible, tuned for demanding workloads: up to ~4x faster transactional and up to 100x faster analytical (HTAP - hybrid transactional and analytical processing) than standard Postgres. Pick it for high-performance Postgres, machine learning, and generative AI workloads.

AlloyDBFully managedbackups, patching, replication, scalingFast transactions~4x faster than PostgreSQLHigh availability99.99% uptime SLA, incl. maintenanceReal-time insightsup to 100x faster analytics
One managed engine, four capabilities: it stays fully managed, runs transactions ~4x faster than standard PostgreSQL, holds a 99.99% uptime SLA, and answers analytical queries up to 100x faster - hybrid transactional + analytical processing (HTAP) in a single database.

Architecture

AlloyDB pairs a Google-built database engine with a cloud-based, multi-node architecture to deliver enterprise-grade performance, reliability, and availability. It is a fully managed service: backups, replication, patching, and capacity management are automated for you.

On top of that it uses adaptive algorithms and machine learning to tune the parts of PostgreSQL you would otherwise babysit - vacuum management, storage and memory management, data tiering, and analytics acceleration.

When to use

Suitable for demanding enterprise workloads, in particular ones that need high transaction throughput, large data sizes, or multiple read replicas.

Exam cueAlloyDB is the "demanding PostgreSQL" answer
PostgreSQL compatibility and high throughput, huge datasets, HTAP, or built-in AIAlloyDB, not Cloud SQL

Plain Cloud SQL for PostgreSQL is the answer only when the workload is ordinary.

Built-in AI

Native integration with Vertex AI (Google's machine learning platform) lets you call ML models directly from SQL - which is what makes AlloyDB the pick for machine learning and generative AI workloads.
